Day 42 & 43Day 42 <br />
June 14th, 2012<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Ok so officially my first nuc is dead.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Maybe 200-300 bees left in there, at least
255 drones.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Out of the 10 frames 4
frames had a handful each on them. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Good news is I picked up the new Nuc from Eddy Honey today.
Great to meet someone from the group just wish he was a little closer. I did
not take any pics of the nuc but it looked great. Nice fat queen Great laying pattern
good stores great temper. It was a full five frames and now knowing a little
more about bees then I did when I started the 2 nucs I have gotten this year
are as different as night and day.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">So I finally got home about 8pm and did as Iddee suggested.
I put the new hive in the old hives place took the frames from the old hive and
knocked the bees off in front of the new hive. </span><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Maybe about 200-300 bees.</span></div>

Day 14 and 15Well its been 2 weeks since I updated this post. So I will fill everyone in on what has been happening .<br />
First some hive inspections and photos:<br />
<br />
<br />Day 14<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">May 17<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span> , 2012</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
Well Its been a crazy few days.. an I think I just made it worse... So before work I go to check the Hive and report back what I find.. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMOt6CR7o33R3Ffr6uPCVGTNI4oB-O9nFPDwkqMTZdwqs2sQgin_-7qb5UJ_u6vMKzjPRO56OQktGEkmiHkF4rA4lfv0M8oQd-5Vazmew-2ghauYzVW6kAvQyU5Dz0tUkHofgVyQB-ZGcx/s1600/P5160027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMOt6CR7o33R3Ffr6uPCVGTNI4oB-O9nFPDwkqMTZdwqs2sQgin_-7qb5UJ_u6vMKzjPRO56OQktGEkmiHkF4rA4lfv0M8oQd-5Vazmew-2ghauYzVW6kAvQyU5Dz0tUkHofgVyQB-ZGcx/s320/P5160027.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
Found the orginal marked queen and open and close queen cells. I was going to kill her but then I remembered Iddee saying to post what I find and go from there... so I close up and go to work.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDAmMaxovMU5hyphenhyphenfSxZ6x9vrFZUlgXDW8HVwmpRCJcwVE3zfsjlVXYRvWZSToeH4LVCUbKrgNiIHDD1-bFsZ3x5yG3XzX1GLPE6Xdwbs83fe_3EkLLY0oH4F8JhWd6HIsWQ-8JUEsRWYhA9/s1600/P5160014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDAmMaxovMU5hyphenhyphenfSxZ6x9vrFZUlgXDW8HVwmpRCJcwVE3zfsjlVXYRvWZSToeH4LVCUbKrgNiIHDD1-bFsZ3x5yG3XzX1GLPE6Xdwbs83fe_3EkLLY0oH4F8JhWd6HIsWQ-8JUEsRWYhA9/s320/P5160014.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
So today I figure everyone is telling me to kill the queen I am just going to do it. Go in the hive find her finish looking for queen cells and another queen .. I did not see another queen but found my first SHB. I did kill it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjobk1TBUiImNz1Yqhyphenhyphenv_-1KY6QaW139f8wUyU0lusU7ICjOH8LNUniyJ_DranNbvrN4NppMrbKxvR4ORzIYIj40fCm89F4S3uoHmUX1sXidpnAxtcImMe6gIWTsj2yyet0ChE-DrO87YVf/s1600/P5160009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjobk1TBUiImNz1Yqhyphenhyphenv_-1KY6QaW139f8wUyU0lusU7ICjOH8LNUniyJ_DranNbvrN4NppMrbKxvR4ORzIYIj40fCm89F4S3uoHmUX1sXidpnAxtcImMe6gIWTsj2yyet0ChE-DrO87YVf/s320/P5160009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
So Im about to pinch the queen when I get my first sting on my wrist. My very first bee sting ever.. Took the stinger out and watched it swell up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Then as I try to get the queen again.. she takes off and I loose her. I dont know if she flew back to the hive or to the grass... I wait a few min and still cant find her. Looks like 3...total<br />
<br />
<br />
On another note am I wrong for not being too happy with the Seller of the Nuc for I finally got another responce from her after I asked several times what the NJ state inspector says.. Here is her answer:<br />
<br />
<i>"I did talk to the NJ inspector and he said let them be. The new queen will come out and take care of the old one. Leave them alone.. In those words. There are many times when you start a nuc the bees don't like the queen they let her lay eggs and then they raise a new one. I trust what my inspector says. Chat soon Sallie"</i><br />
<br />
Also made an Observation Hive today for the Nature Fest 2012 ..<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Well I have had some BAD luck with suppliers this year so I
will tell you who I ordered from , Who SCREWED me, and who did ok by me..</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">So my first ANYTHING bee related I ordered 2 Hive setups
from www.BeeBabys.com </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">WORST and WOULD NEVER USE OR RECOMMEND to be used. This was
the story.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">First week of April 2012 I order 2 complete hive setups and
pay $220.. Mid March (4 weeks) I haven’t heard from or received anything I try
to call, I get a pre recorded message that the Voice mail is full. So I email.
The first one from the website no answer, the second one from Pay-Pal. Also no answer,
so I called about 25 more times over the next 2 days. I finally opened up a
claim with Pay-Pal and had a refund within 24hrs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Now that’s not the end of the story.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I start a thread on </span><a href="http://www.beekeepingforums.com/"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">http://www.beekeepingforums.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>( </span><a href="http://www.beekeepingforums.com/threads/5993-WARNING-Do-NOT-buy-from-BeeBabys-com?highlight=beebabys.com"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">http://www.beekeepingforums.com/threads/5993-WARNING-Do-NOT-buy-from-BeeBabys-com?highlight=beebabys.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;">
) To warn others. And some members knew <span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Justin Cheesman
(owner of Beebaby.com) they said he was posting on other message boards that he
was swamped with orders and could not fill them. He had time to post on
messages boards but couldn’t answerer an email? Real POS if you ask me so
PLEASE NEVER USE BeeBaby.com. And a big FU to Justin “I am too busy on the
internet to answer E-Mails” Cheesman.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Next was Walter T. Kelly
(</span><a href="https://kelleybees.com/"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">https://kelleybees.com/</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> ) Ordered Hive
top feeder, hive tools and burlap for smoker. Shipping was slow (3 weeks), and high
shipping price. I would use again if I could not find what I want from somewhere
else.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">So Now that I did not
have a Hive and my bees would be coming in 3 weeks I was worried. I get recommended
Honeybee Habitat ( </span><a href="http://www.honeybeehabitat.com/"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">http://www.honeybeehabitat.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;">
). Now I email and call (leaving a voice mail) and within 2 hrs I get a call
back from Steve. I explained what had happened and how I need a hive fast. He assures
me He can help and take care of me. So I order 2 hive kits and a smoker. The
hives were ordered already fully assembled and painted. Came to about $75 more
(without smoker) then the original order from BeeBaby.com BUT these were assembled
and painted. Order went easy. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I received
the hives in about 1 week from order. Only problem was the hives were not
painted. I contacted Steve and explained that they were not painted. He was
very apologetic and said that there were several orders that went out wrong and
that he would refund the difference and a few extra for my inconvenience. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At that point there was nothing I could do so
I accepted the refund and painted them myself. I WOULD give Honeybee Habitat
another try.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">On to where I got my bee’s<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">So being my first year in
beekeeping I did not know you normally order bees in Jan for the following
spring. I was looking in early March. Everywhere was sold out. I then found Bee
Hive Barn in NJ (</span><a href="http://www.beehivebarn.com/"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">http://www.beehivebarn.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;">
) I call and spoke to Sally and she said she had some early May Nuc’s. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I paid my deposit and had one secured. . Fast-forward
to today... Well if you have been following my issues with the queen from this
week ( </span><a href="http://www.beekeepingforums.com/threads/6635-2nd-hive-inspection-Have-some-questions-need-advice?highlight=advice"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">http://www.beekeepingforums.com/threads/6635-2nd-hive-inspection-Have-some-questions-need-advice?highlight=advice</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;">
) I am hoping that Sally comes through and re-queens for me or at least at a
discounted price.. We will see. I will keep everyone posted.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>A New York City Beekeeperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18087163177799690195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8887935598087699260.post-57702498553773879852012-05-14T05:46:00.001-07:002012-06-02T04:58:56.440-07:00My New York City Bee Adventure .. Day 9 second Hive Inspection..Happy Mothers Day!!!<br />
<br />
Day 9 <br />
May 13th , 2012<br />
<br />
Yesterday Was my birthday and my wife asked what I want.. I told her I wanted her to come do the inspection with me.... and she did. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWlh21kgAD0h5CgpIOMOOj6VtAqc2J86CdhdbrxKssPhqv3bBxwbR6KkJsV9F3Cs6nKcO2u-RzL6UUkA0v3K6l0IAiJdcTHKp7GkfBhAdYbu4a1mRbESPpZvjXLD1mLS5tr5cJtVw9TN52/s1600/bee+inspection.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWlh21kgAD0h5CgpIOMOOj6VtAqc2J86CdhdbrxKssPhqv3bBxwbR6KkJsV9F3Cs6nKcO2u-RzL6UUkA0v3K6l0IAiJdcTHKp7GkfBhAdYbu4a1mRbESPpZvjXLD1mLS5tr5cJtVw9TN52/s320/bee+inspection.png" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
Ok so I did my second hive inspection and I may need some help. This is what I saw :<br />
<br />
Frame 1 , 2, 8 ,9 ,10 both sides empty . Frame 3 Left side empty ,Right side bees starting to draw out comb, Frames 4,5,6,7 were from the original nuc. Queen found on frame 5 right side. Watched queen for over 2min and only laid 1 egg. brood a little spotty , a lot of capped drone. no capped honey and seen quite a few pollen. Queen cells that were seen on first inspection seem to me taken down. but did find 1 capped and 1 open cell.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the queen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
So I was worried about what I saw. I asked for some advice from some members of the best Beekeeping Forum on the net <a href="http://www.beekeepingforums.com/">http://www.beekeepingforums.com</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Advice that I have gotten was not good news for me:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Yes, you should be worried. She is laying drones in brood cells. I would pinch her immediately and either buy a queen or hope the cell makes a viable queen. The hive is doomed if she stays in there."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I Asked why??</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"The pics show drone and worker capped brood intermixed. They should be grouped separately in different areas of the frames. Show her the pics and she will see the problem.<br />
Especially , the one with the queen cell."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
" The queen is fertilizing part time. She needs to go immediately."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So Now I get nervous. They also say I should contact the seller. I called her and explained to her what was going on and what advice I am getting. I sent her an E-mail with the Link to the thread and photos.. I am waiting for her reply....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

As you can see the girls like the feeder. No girls drowning in feeder. I must say it was maybe $2-$3 more then the avg hive top feeder But I must say it was worth it. The girls ave very calm. I had no vail, or jacket and was not even buzzed. <br />

Day 4 First Hive Inspection<div align="center">
Well it was day 4 since I installed a 4 frame nuc into my 10 frame Deep. I did the install at the yard where I picked up the nuc. I saw the marked Queen (yellow) an saw Brood at that time. Moved them to my yard and installed a <span class="highlight">hive</span> top feeder with 1:1 and Honey -Bee- Healthy. Covered it up and lt it sit. It has been raining on and off the last 3 days and today has been a nice day.. mid 60's some sun little to no breeze.. I have seen the girls out and brining back pollen.<br />
<br />
Ok so I make some more feed, light my smoker don my jacket and vail, <span class="highlight">Hive</span> tool, brush , frame grip and camera and head to the <span class="highlight">hive</span>...<br />
<br />
About 20 girls flying around... I open up the top and remove the feeder ( which dosen't look like was even touched) no girls in there... Remove the inner cover...and see the girls working. I pop one of the un-drawn frames out to give room and start my insprction.<br />

Day 3</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
9:00am .. So I go out to take the garbage pails in from the curb ans I see my neighbor Eddie ( Cathys Husband) talking to another neighbor Richie..</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ed : " And you with these bees"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Me " What... "</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ed ' I give them a week"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Me " they wont hurt anyone.. I walked right up to them yesterday"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Richie: what are you talking about"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ed " he has a bee hive in the yard"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Me " They are harmless... Want some honey?"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ed " A can a raid and your wife is going to buy it for me"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Me "stop.. dont worry .. they will be fine"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ed " Vandles ... in the Night"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Just then another neighbor pulls up in a car and thank god changes the subject.....</div>

Day 1 and Day 2<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day 1 <br />May 3rd 2012<br /><br />WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!! ... I got my Bee's.... Ok so here is the story:<br /><br />At 4:30pm tonight I went to pick up my Nuc. I was told to bring my hive so I would not have to leave a deposit for the Nuc Box... So I packed my wifes minivan with a Deep , bottom board , inner cover , outer cover & Jacket and off I went...Then I realized I forgot my tiedown straps in my car... Quick stop at Lowes and got another set. I was excited like a kid on Christmas.. Had to drive about 40 min..Thank GOD for GPS ... I still blew past it.<br /><br />So I pull in to the drivway and told to follow The Golf cart.. I pull up to about 20 nucs and 10 hives... Sally of Bee Hive Barn said that the first one is mine. and i should get my hive. as I get the hive she puts on her jacket and lights her smoker. She asked if I wanted to look for the queen and move the frames to my hive or wanted her to do it for me.. I said Nope I'll do it...<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jls2glX19rI8H4HC13R4wRskJWQcdxtD6Plv46YzhNbhCJ4MFMBAOungZHqtGtVUhNvkg2PedsMJiwHMlIk3AKx6AEvjXVTZliuwZoJ2agvyIhPLbbHJJb-fuJfVrwOzdiSBr45xScGU/s1600/P5030061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jls2glX19rI8H4HC13R4wRskJWQcdxtD6Plv46YzhNbhCJ4MFMBAOungZHqtGtVUhNvkg2PedsMJiwHMlIk3AKx6AEvjXVTZliuwZoJ2agvyIhPLbbHJJb-fuJfVrwOzdiSBr45xScGU/s320/P5030061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /><br /><br />So I put on my Jacket and headed over.. She smoked the Nuc and handed me a hive tool. I got the cover right off. Then she told me to Remove the frames and look for the queen. No gloves and I went for it .She told me that she was marked "Yellow"... It was on the first frame.. Found her right away...COOL ... Very Gentle bees.. 1 or 2 buzzed me a few times but that was it.<br /><br />I put the rest of the frames in the Deep put the covers on and straped them together. We then Taped an entrence reducer over the entrence and loaded it back in the minivan. And I drive back to the office to pay. I also buy a Hive Moving bag.. but keep that in the front seat with me...lol<br /><br />Ok so I get home with out any issues... set up the hive in my yard and put the feeder I figured it would only take a few seconds.. I a beekeeper now... No gloves before so no jacket and no smoke now... Before everyone thinks I got stung .. I didn't.. But I wound do that again.... This is why...<br /><br /><a href="http://www.beekeepingforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3643&d=1336188793" id="attachment3643" rel="Lightbox_86"><img alt="Click image for larger version.

Yep I found out that Bees like to hitch rides on shirts... THANK GOD the wife was not home or I would be sleeping in the car.. So I cought her and let he go outside... I fill the feeder and re-cover everything. ... Go in the house and sit down to eat some dinner... As I am eating I go to scratch my side and feel something under my shirt.. BINGO,,, another Bee. I take my shirt off and it looks like She tried to sting me because it looks like she is dragging her venom sack behind her. Grabed her and let her go out side too...<br /><br /><a href="http://www.beekeepingforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3644&d=1336188869" id="attachment3644" rel="Lightbox_86"><img alt="Click image for larger version.

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Day 2<br />May 4th , 2012<br /><br />I woke up today wanting to run out and open the hive ( Dont worry I didn't..lol) . What stinks is I have been waiting months to get them and now I have them and I still have the high.. I figured It would go away but nope.. still excited... think even more ... I may if the weather is good on Sat pull up a chair and a book and sit near the hive just to watch whats going on...<br /><br />Ok so day 2...@ 10:00 am, and more pics...It rained this am and there is an overcast.. just wanted to see if any of the girls were out.. and they Were ...I guess it was <span style="color: black;">Orientation Flights.. about 5-6 out at a time gust doing a few passes around hive then back in</span></div>
