Suppliers that have screwed Me and who did right..

Well I have had some BAD luck with suppliers this year so I will tell you who I ordered from , Who SCREWED me, and who did ok by me..

So my first ANYTHING bee related I ordered 2 Hive setups from www.BeeBabys.com

WORST and WOULD NEVER USE OR RECOMMEND to be used. This was the story.

First week of April 2012 I order 2 complete hive setups and pay $220.. Mid March (4 weeks) I haven’t heard from or received anything I try to call, I get a pre recorded message that the Voice mail is full. So I email. The first one from the website no answer, the second one from Pay-Pal. Also no answer, so I called about 25 more times over the next 2 days. I finally opened up a claim with Pay-Pal and had a refund within 24hrs.  Now that’s not the end of the story.  I start a thread on http://www.beekeepingforums.com   ( http://www.beekeepingforums.com/threads/5993-WARNING-Do-NOT-buy-from-BeeBabys-com?highlight=beebabys.com ) To warn others. And some members knew Justin Cheesman (owner of Beebaby.com) they said he was posting on other message boards that he was swamped with orders and could not fill them. He had time to post on messages boards but couldn’t answerer an email? Real POS if you ask me so PLEASE NEVER USE BeeBaby.com. And a big FU to Justin “I am too busy on the internet to answer E-Mails” Cheesman.

Next was Walter T. Kelly (https://kelleybees.com/ ) Ordered Hive top feeder, hive tools and burlap for smoker. Shipping was slow (3 weeks), and high shipping price. I would use again if I could not find what I want from somewhere else.

So Now that I did not have a Hive and my bees would be coming in 3 weeks I was worried. I get recommended Honeybee Habitat ( http://www.honeybeehabitat.com ). Now I email and call (leaving a voice mail) and within 2 hrs I get a call back from Steve. I explained what had happened and how I need a hive fast. He assures me He can help and take care of me. So I order 2 hive kits and a smoker. The hives were ordered already fully assembled and painted. Came to about $75 more (without smoker) then the original order from BeeBaby.com BUT these were assembled and painted. Order went easy.  I received the hives in about 1 week from order. Only problem was the hives were not painted. I contacted Steve and explained that they were not painted. He was very apologetic and said that there were several orders that went out wrong and that he would refund the difference and a few extra for my inconvenience.  At that point there was nothing I could do so I accepted the refund and painted them myself. I WOULD give Honeybee Habitat another try.

On to where I got my bee’s

So being my first year in beekeeping I did not know you normally order bees in Jan for the following spring. I was looking in early March. Everywhere was sold out. I then found Bee Hive Barn in NJ (http://www.beehivebarn.com ) I call and spoke to Sally and she said she had some early May Nuc’s.  I paid my deposit and had one secured. . Fast-forward to today... Well if you have been following my issues with the queen from this week ( http://www.beekeepingforums.com/threads/6635-2nd-hive-inspection-Have-some-questions-need-advice?highlight=advice ) I am hoping that Sally comes through and re-queens for me or at least at a discounted price.. We will see. I will keep everyone posted.

My New York City Bee Adventure .. Day 9 second Hive Inspection..

Happy Mothers Day!!!

Day 9
May 13th , 2012

Yesterday Was my birthday and my wife asked what I want.. I told her I wanted her to come do the inspection with me.... and she did.

Ok so I did my second hive inspection and I may need some help. This is what I saw :

Frame 1 , 2, 8 ,9 ,10 both sides empty . Frame 3 Left side empty ,Right side bees starting to draw out comb, Frames 4,5,6,7 were from the original nuc. Queen found on frame 5 right side. Watched queen for over 2min and only laid 1 egg. brood a little spotty , a lot of capped drone. no capped honey and seen quite a few pollen. Queen cells that were seen on first inspection seem to me taken down. but did find 1 capped and 1 open cell.

Here is the queen.

Here are some of the queen cells I found. Supersede Cells? 1 open 1 capped

 Pollen and nectar cells

So I was worried about what I saw. I asked for some advice from some members of the best Beekeeping Forum on the net http://www.beekeepingforums.com

Advice that I have gotten was not good news for me:

"Yes, you should be worried. She is laying drones in brood cells. I would pinch her immediately and either buy a queen or hope the cell makes a viable queen. The hive is doomed if she stays in there."

I Asked why??

"The pics show drone and worker capped brood intermixed. They should be grouped separately in different areas of the frames. Show her the pics and she will see the problem.
Especially , the one with the queen cell."

" The queen is fertilizing part time. She needs to go immediately."

So Now I get nervous. They also say I should contact the seller. I called her and explained to her what was going on and what advice I am getting. I sent her an E-mail with the Link to the thread and photos.. I am waiting for her reply....

My New York City Bee Adventure .. Day 5 ,6 and 7

Day 5 May 8th  & Day 6 May 9th 2012

Rain..... Rain...... Rain

It Rained on and off for two days .

Day 7 May 10 2012

One week in Wooo Hoo. First and most important.... NO STINGS!!!.. I have not been in the hive since day 4, But I did check the hive top feeder to make sure the bees are taking the feed...

As you can see the girls like the feeder. No girls drowning in feeder. I must say it was maybe $2-$3 more then the avg hive top feeder But I must say it was worth it.  The girls ave very calm. I had no vail, or jacket and was not even buzzed.

The Girls Coming and going. Working . Again very calm I was 3 inches from the enterence and none were buzzing me or even checking me out. They were just going about thier day. If the weather holds up I will check them again on Sunday .. Mothers Day..

My New York City Bee Adventure... Day 4 First Hive Inspection

Well it was day 4 since I installed a 4 frame nuc into my 10 frame Deep. I did the install at the yard where I picked up the nuc. I saw the marked Queen (yellow) an saw Brood at that time. Moved them to my yard and installed a hive top feeder with 1:1 and Honey -Bee- Healthy. Covered it up and lt it sit. It has been raining on and off the last 3 days and today has been a nice day.. mid 60's some sun little to no breeze.. I have seen the girls out and brining back pollen.

Ok so I make some more feed, light my smoker don my jacket and vail, Hive tool, brush , frame grip and camera and head to the hive...

About 20 girls flying around... I open up the top and remove the feeder ( which dosen't look like was even touched) no girls in there... Remove the inner cover...and see the girls working. I pop one of the un-drawn frames out to give room and start my insprction.

Ed " he has a bee hive in the yard"
Me " They are harmless... Want some honey?"
Ed " A can a raid and your wife is going to buy it for me"
Me "stop.. dont worry .. they will be fine"
Ed " Vandles ... in the Night"
Just then another neighbor pulls up in a car and thank god changes the subject.....

I just looked at the hive.. Its all quiet.. no bees out..... Now I am thinking did he poision them already...lol But its a slight drizzle about 55 degrees .. It should be sunny in the hi 60's to low 70's by noon time... I will take a peak back then..

My New York City Bee Adventure... Day 1 and Day 2

Day 1
May 3rd 2012

WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!! ... I got my Bee's.... Ok so here is the story:

At 4:30pm tonight I went to pick up my Nuc. I was told to bring my hive so I would not have to leave a deposit for the Nuc Box... So I packed my wifes minivan with a Deep , bottom board , inner cover , outer cover & Jacket and off I went...Then I realized I forgot my tiedown straps in my car... Quick stop at Lowes and got another set. I was excited like a kid on Christmas.. Had to drive about 40 min..Thank GOD for GPS ... I still blew past it.

So I pull in to the drivway and told to follow The Golf cart.. I pull up to about 20 nucs and 10 hives... Sally of Bee Hive Barn said that the first one is mine. and i should get my hive. as I get the hive she puts on her jacket and lights her smoker. She asked if I wanted to look for the queen and move the frames to my hive or wanted her to do it for me.. I said Nope I'll do it...

So I put on my Jacket and headed over.. She smoked the Nuc and handed me a hive tool. I got the cover right off. Then she told me to Remove the frames and look for the queen. No gloves and I went for it .She told me that she was marked "Yellow"... It was on the first frame.. Found her right away...COOL ... Very Gentle bees.. 1 or 2 buzzed me a few times but that was it.

I put the rest of the frames in the Deep put the covers on and straped them together. We then Taped an entrence reducer over the entrence and loaded it back in the minivan. And I drive back to the office to pay. I also buy a Hive Moving bag.. but keep that in the front seat with me...lol

Ok so I get home with out any issues... set up the hive in my yard and put the feeder I figured it would only take a few seconds.. I a beekeeper now... No gloves before so no jacket and no smoke now... Before everyone thinks I got stung .. I didn't.. But I wound do that again.... This is why...

Once it's all set up I go in the house to make the 1:1 feed... while I am in the kitchen I start to hear som buzzzzzing... Yep I found out that Bees like to hitch rides on shirts... THANK GOD the wife was not home or I would be sleeping in the car.. So I cought her and let he go outside... I fill the feeder and re-cover everything. ... Go in the house and sit down to eat some dinner... As I am eating I go to scratch my side and feel something under my shirt.. BINGO,,, another Bee. I take my shirt off and it looks like She tried to sting me because it looks like she is dragging her venom sack behind her. Grabed her and let her go out side too...

Day 2
May 4th , 2012

I woke up today wanting to run out and open the hive ( Dont worry I didn't..lol) . What stinks is I have been waiting months to get them and now I have them and I still have the high.. I figured It would go away but nope.. still excited... think even more ... I may if the weather is good on Sat pull up a chair and a book and sit near the hive just to watch whats going on...

Ok so day 2...@ 10:00 am, and more pics...It rained this am and there is an overcast.. just wanted to see if any of the girls were out.. and they Were ...I guess it was Orientation Flights.. about 5-6 out at a time gust doing a few passes around hive then back in

Sooo the story of Day 2 continues....It's about 2:30pm and I am getting ready to go in to work when my neighbor "Cathy"calls..

Cathy:" Michael, I just let the dog out in the back"
Me "Oh No what happend to Oreo"
Cathy " Nothing he is ok but whats in the White Box in the back yard, You have a bunch of bee's
              flying around it"
Me (long pause.. never told them)...." Oh yeah its ok its a bee hive "
Cathy(long pause) "so they are going in there... ok...
Me "yeah... I am hive sitting for a friend..(lol)
Cathy "Your Crazy"...

So with that I go out side for some more pics... About 100 bees flying all around the box...
